Remutaka is a mountain range in the Wellington region. It's a popular hiking area and one way to access the tracks is from the south, from the Catchpool Valley carpark. To get there you drive to Wainuiomata and continue on the Coast Road for a few kilometres until you see the signpost indicating a left turn to the Catchpool Valley road. At the end of this road there is a big parking where you also find the Catchpool Valley campsite.
There are several tracks that start from this spot. We'll follow several of these tracks to make a nice counterclockwise loop.
From the carpark we follow Orongorongo Track for about 4 Kilometres. Before getting to the end of this track we make a left to get to McKerrow Track.
Orongorongo Track is quite gentle and only once we get into McKerrow Track is where the ascent really starts.
We follow McKerrow Track for about 3.6 kilometres until we get to the top of Mount McKerrow (706 m). This track continues further but we'll stop here. At the summit don't expect anything fancy or any views. There is only bush and trees.
At the summit we turn back keeping an eye because at about 300 metres there is a junction where we'll make a left to take Clay Ridge Track.
Clay Ridge Track takes about 4 kilometres downhill until reaching a junction where there are three options to go back to the Catchpool carpark. We decided to take Five Mile Loop Track but you could also take Middle Ridge Track or even Orongorongo Track.
After the last 1.5 kilometres on Five Mile Loop Track we arrive back at the car.
