This track starts at the parking area next to the Wainui lookout. It follows the Main Ridge Track to go up Wainui (238 m), Lowry (373 m) and Hawtrey (343 m).
You can stop at the parking area only when driving from Wainuiomata to Lower Hutt, so you first have to drive over the hill to get to Wainuiomata, turn around, and on your way back, at the top of the hill, you can get to the parking.
Just a few meters from the start is the Wainui lookout, where you have really great views of the Hutt Valley and, on good days, probably all the way to Wellington. Enjoy the views because this is the only spot on the track where you have views. The rest of the track, even though it follows the ridge, you are inside the bush, so you can't see anything besides trees.
The first summit, Wainui, is only 500 metres from the start. There is no summit at such. There is nothing indicating you are at the summit, not even the elevation difference makes it obvious, so you'll probably miss this summit as I did.

Continuing on the ridge, about 2.5 kilometres after Wainui you get to a bench, with views to nowhere. Here you take a short 200 metres detour of the Main Ridge Track to get to Lowry summit. This is the second and highest summit for the day. This summit has no views once again, but at least there is a geodetic survey mark indicating you have reached it.

After going back the 200 metres to the bench, continue on the Main Ridge Track for another 3.8 Km to get to Hawtrey. No views from this summit, and nothing indicating you have reached the summit. I even continued on the track for another 100 metres to make sure I had not missed the summit.

To return, you follow the same ridge back to the car park.

This is a nice track to get some exercise after work, keeping in mind you'll have no views to reward you for your effort, apart from the great ones at the start.
