The track starts from a car park right out of the Castle Hill Village. This car park is fairly big so you won't have trouble finding a spot, although if you want, you could also start a few hundred meters earlier from the village itself.
Once we start walking we find a bridge to cross the Thomas River and soon after that we join and follow counter-clock-wise the Leith Hill loop track from DOC. This track goes mostly through the bush where the slope is gentle.
After a couple of kilometres on the track we get out of the bush where we find a nice picnic table. At this spot we need to make a 90-degree sharp turn to the right, leaving the DOC track and starting the real ascent aiming for the ridge. Everything from this point onwards is off track and quite steep, where you need to find your best way uphill.
After 200 metres we reach the ridge where we make a left turn and keep going up. There are some parts with scree and some with vegetation. I tried to avoid scree on the way up because it can get frustrating when you slide down a bit on every step. Quite the opposite on the way down when it can even be fun.
In less than one kilometre of hard work the slope gets almost flat and we reach the top area. At the first false summit we turn right looking for the highest point, which is a couple of hundred meters ahead.
The views from the summit are quite nice. The much higher mountains in front are really impressive. Looking back you can see Castle Hill Peak far in the distance.
To go down we tried to follow the same path as we came up.
