This hike that goes up Wye Dome (20250 m) starts from The Remarkables ski field car park. To get to this car park you need to drive up the 13 Km private road. This road is mostly sealed, except for the last one or two kilometres. As of 2023, a $15 toll applies per vehicle to get through the barrier and access the road. You can pay at the barrier itself with an EFTPOS or credit card.
The walk starts on the main building of the ski field and follows the Lake Alta Track up to Lake Alta and then continue on Wye Creek Track from Lake Alta to the saddle. From the saddle the track goes down to the other side, but instead we turn left to get on the rocky ridge that goes up to the Wye Dome summit.
From the start to Lake Alta is a pretty easy walk and well marked, and then it turns into rocky terrain with no signs of any kind.
The initial idea was to turn right at the saddle to attempt Single Cone (2319 m), but the wind was so strong that we considered that attempt too dangerous and went for the shorter, easier and lower Wye Dome instead. The views from Wye Dome summit are quite good, both North looking at The Remarkables ski field and Lake Alta and South where there are other small lakes and the continuation of the Wye Creek Track.
As a curiosity, we spotted a couple of wild deer on our way down, just above Lake Alta.
