This hike goes up Mount Maude (1315 m). Although the track going up starts off the road this GPX track starts a bit earlier, from the Lake Hawea boat ramp, where you can easily park your car. There is no space to park the car along the road.
Once we start walking from the car, you follow the road North for about 300 meters. At that point, on your left, you will spot the start of the narrow track that goes up.
The track is easy to follow although this is not an official track from the Department of Conservation (DOC) and thus there are no orange markers. This mountain could even be private land. I didn't see any signposts stating that or fences that could lead to say so.
Once we start our ascent, the track is narrow and quite steep, even more for the first 300 meters, while in the forest. Out of the forest you get to alpine terrain where it's not so steep and you start having great views of Hawea Lake.
A bit higher you get into a rocky terrain where there is no track anymore to follow. You choose the way that looks better to you. On my way up I decided to go straight up. It's steeper but I didn't find it too bad.
Keep going up and eventually you get to the ridge where you make a left turn and head towards the summit.
Pretty soon you are at the summit enjoying the great views of Lake Hawea and also Lake Wanaka.
To go down I decided to follow the ridge a bit further trying to find a bit less steep terrain. It was better but not that much.
In summary, a hike pretty close to town, quite steep and fantastic views of both lakes, Hawea and Wanaka. One not to miss if you are visiting Hawea.
