The Kaitarakihi summit track is an official track from the Department of Conservation New Zealand (DOC).
The track starts right by the road. It's not easy to find a spot to park the car. Driving West to East I found where to leave the car about 100 meters past the start of the track, next to a DOC signpost
I found this track pretty narrow and the overgrown vegetation does not help. Quite often you cannot see where you are stepping, and there are many rocks and roots. I bet not many people follow this track.
You are inside the forest all the way, from beginning to end. Apart from the summit and a couple of spots on the ascent you won't have many views.
To get to the summit is only 3.75 Kilometres and for the first 3.25 Kilometers is ups and downs, mostly up. The last 500 meters is where it gets very steep. Half way through these last 500 meters you will even encounter a set of chains to help you in your ascent.
I wouldn't say these last 500 meters are too difficult but it will be a totally different story when raining or windy.
Once you get to the top you see some signs from DOC and some nice views. Unfortunately you don't get views to the North so you cannot see The Pinnacles and anything else on the North side of the Coromandel Peninsula.
To go down we follow the same way being very careful when descending, even more where the chains are.
Because all that I described expect the time to go up and down to be very similar.
